Junior Rojas (right), a certified chef from Lamesa who currently cooks for a rehabilitation facility in Midland, not only won a skillet and top bragging rights but also pocketed $600 as the winner of the Chicken Fried Steak Cookoff as part of Lamesa’s 12th Chicken Fried Steak Festival this past weekend. The Chicken Fried Steak Festival’s pageant brought out infants, toddlers and even a teenager. Milo Vasquez-Martinez, 10 months, took first place in the boys’ “Tiny” division along with first place in the photogenic category. Maverick Valle took second places in both the”Tiny” category and in the photogenic contest. Four-year-old Aria Barron won first place in the girls’ “Tiny” division, followed by Luna Delynn Clement, 5 1/2 months, in second place. Luna also captured first place in the photogenic category and Aria came in second. Hallie Wilson won first place in the “Little” division with Annalisa Garza receiving the runner-up title. Hallie also captured first place in the photogenic contest with Kerrigan Barron coming in second. Mongolian foreign exchange student Gantigmaa Myagmarjav, 16, took first place in both the “Teen” division and photogenic contests. LPR photo

The Golden Tornadoes’ red-hot softball squad will be looking to take their second step in the playoffs this weekend against the Abernathy Antelopes.
The Golden Tornadoes are in the baseball playoffs again but it wasn’t until Monday night that they knew which path it would take them.
With both the softball and playoffs underway, Lamesa’s Joe Spikes Field is gaining popularity.
Their season record doesn’t sound like much but that’s not keeping the O’Donnell Eagles from feeling fairly upbeat going into the Class 1A state baseball playoffs this week.
The Borden County Coyotes are riding a five-game win streak heading into this weekend’s baseball playoffs and their hitting continues to lead the way.
