From Welch to Patricia and all over Lamesa, fires caused by Independence Day fireworks were popping up at a steady clip here Saturday night. A building at the former Lamesa Country Club was heavily damaged and an abandoned house in Patricia was leveled by flames. “We set a record,” Lamesa Fire Chief Larry Duyck said. “In 24 hours we had 19 fire calls, and they were all fireworks related.” Duyck said firefighters would get one blaze extinguished and have just enough time to refill their tanks with water before heading to another. “It was pretty much non-stop,” he said.
