Sixteen state prison inmates will be spending additional time behind bars after being convicted recently for committing criminal offenses while in the Texas prison system’s Smith Unit here. Those offenses ranged from assaulting correctional officers to illegally possessing cellular phones in a correctional facility. The longest sentence handed out in district court by Judge Cecil Puryear, serving here by assignment, was a 10-year term ordered for 31-year-old David Stewart. Stewart had been indicted here this past June on two charges alleging aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
