The summer break ended Wednesday morning for some 1,500 students in the Lamesa school system as they headed back to classes for the new school year. At the high school (above), percussionist band members, cheerleaders and varsity athletes lined the sidewalk to the student entry door on the west side of the campus, welcoming back their classmates. Just across the street at North Elementary, physical education teacher Penny Borland (right) was photographed giving a big hug to a student arriving at the front door.
