Improving their season record to 14-1 with two comfortable wins on Friday, the Sands High School girls basketball team was scheduled to play in the championship game of their own tournament on Saturday at Ackerly. The Lady Mustangs overcame something of a slow start to capture a 50-27 win over Smyer in their first game of the tournament. Sands led 17-12 at halftime before outscoring Smyer 14-3 in the third period. “We outscored them in the third quarter and that’s what broke the game away,” Sands Coach Ben Connell said. Landry Morrow was Sands’ leading scorer with 17 points. Me-A Gonzalez scored 11 points,
