Cougar boys and girls lose at home Tuesday

Both Klondike’s boys and girls basketball squads found themselves on their home court Tuesday afternoon in their first game back from the Christmas break.

Unfortunately it wasn’t a good afternoon for the home teams.

Klondike lost the girls game to Highland, 47-22. Now 1-13 this season, the Cougar girls were down 24-13 at the half.

“We started out this game down something like 24-2. But putting up like 11 points in about a 90-second time span at least gave us a little hope,” Klondike Coach Kelsey Canavan said.

“It didn’t take us long to see how our girls didn’t do much on their own during the break. We’re out of shape.”

Izabella Arismendez’s 11 points led Klondike.

Klondike’s boys are now 4-5 on the year after losing Tuesday’s game to No. 12 Westbrook, 53-38.

Klondike was scheduled to host Highland, but Tuesday afternoon Highland canceled due to COVID 19. Klondike Coach Xavier Elizondo was able to pick up Westbrook as a late replacement.

The Cougars were down 25-14 at the half.

“A lot of the shots which had normally been falling for us didn’t fall for us today,” Coach Elizondo said.

“This was one of those days where we just didn’t get the job done.”

Kylar Pepper had 17 points and Gunner Shofner had 10 to lead Klondike. Josh Arismendez had six points, Stephen Arismendez had three and Jackson Raines had two.

Klondike won Tuesday’s JV boys game over Highland, 38-25. Mason Adcock had 13 points and Caden Barron had nine.

After going to Hermleigh Wednesday afternoon, both Klondike’s girls and boys will be back at home on Saturday afternoon against Morton.

Klondike’s girls are scheduled to resume District 8-1A play next Tuesday afternoon at Midland TLCA.

“It sounds like they’ve had to cancel a lot of their games this season so right now we’re just hoping to play,” Canavan said.
