Wilma Currey

    Wilma Belle Currey, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, joined her Lord in Glory on February 2, 2022, after losing her battle with Covid.  
    Wilma was born in Lamesa, Texas on March 31, 1930, to Samuel Day Dabney and Gladys Brown Dabney of Draw, TX, where she was raised. She was a member of the Draw Methodist Church.
Wilma was married to Joe Frank Currey on October 23rd,1946, until his passing March 23, 2008. 
    Wilma lived in Borden County, Mesquite, TX, from 1956 through 2009, when she moved to Lubbock, TX to be closer to her family.  She and Frank farmed cotton, ranched, and enjoyed raising different breeds of registered livestock.  She supported Frank as County Commissioner in Borden County for twelve years. She was an avid reader, loved to cook, and garden.  Her favorite flowers were yellow roses, and her daughters called her “The Yellow Rose of Texas”.  She was passionate about life and loved her family who she always put first. 
    Wilma was a graduate of O’Donnell High School and held a business associates degree.  She was a published writer, a member and awards winner of the Writer’s Guild in Lubbock for many years.
    Cherishing her memory will be her two daughters, Diana Currey Mitchell of  Nashville, TN, and Donna Currey Barnes, Lubbock, TX; two grandchildren, Bryan Ray Barnes, and Danisha Dawn Barnes; four great grandchildren, Whitney Leigh Morales and husband Gabe Morales, Justin Lee Barnes, Rayleigh Belle Bessire, all of Lubbock,  Brayden Ray Barnes, Kaitlyn Rene’ Barnes of Newport AK; and two great-great grandchildren, Ava Grace and Kayson Ray Morales,  her beloved brother, Wesley Dabney of Snyder, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.  
    She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved sister, Lorene Burkett.
    Services will be held at the Methodist Church in Draw, TX, Sunday, February 6th.  There will be a brief visitation at the Church beginning at 1:30 p.m. with services at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Mark Elvers will be officiating.  Following the services, Wilma will be laid to rest in the cemetery at Borden County, Gail, TX.
