Wanda McGee

Wanda L. McGee, 96, passed away peacefully on Feb 27, 2021 in League City, Texas.
Wanda was born in Sweetwater, Texas in 1924. Her family moved to Dawson County shortly after her birth. Wanda’s first husband, David Thomas, was killed in WWII. She married Floyd L. McGee on December 19, 1948 and the couple were together fifty-five years, until Floyd’s death. They were farmers who resided in Lamesa, until Wanda could no longer manage on her own.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband Floyd and her son Gary McGee. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Sandra Thomas, and her granddaughter, Deedra Hodges (nee Thomas).
Wanda was a wonderful caretaker who always wanted to help others. After her children left home she volunteered with an organization that assisted residents at the Big Spring State Hospital and was the caretaker for her sister, Eisteen Locke. Wanda loved animals and, while able, kept a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, and horses. She often nursed injured or abandoned “critters” found at the farm.
Wanda is survived by her son, Darvin Thomas; her daughter, Tinna McGee; and four grandchildren, Dawn, Taryn, Denise, and David.  She also leaves behind multiple nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who fondly remember her as “Aunt Wanda.” Her kindness and concern for family members and friends made a big impact. She will be remembered often by those she left behind.
There will be an informal graveside memorial service on Saturday, March 20, at 11:00 am at Memorial Park Cemetery to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local animal rescue, but if desired flowers may be sent directly to the Memorial Park Cemetery.
