Rubye Buckel

    Rubye Neile Mitchell Buckel, 93, passed away Tuesday morning, April 28, 2020, at Legacy Oaks Assisted Living Community in Azle.
    She was born August 29, 1926 in Montgomery, Alabama, and married Walter Buckel on March 3, 1947 at her parents’ home in Montgomery. They lived in Dallas, Lubbock and San Diego before moving to Lamesa in 1949, where Walter played baseball for the Lobos of the West Texas-New Mexico League.
    Over the next 55 years they made their home in Lamesa, raising two children and participating in the community as Walter worked in insurance, as school cafeteria manager, Dawson County clerk, in radio and finally as publisher of the Lamesa Press-Reporter.
    In addition to her work as a wife, mother and homemaker, Rubye worked at Baldwin’s Department Store, worked in the cafeteria at V.Z. Rogers Elementary School, and worked at times alongside her husband at the Dawson County Free Press and the Press-Reporter.
    The family were active members of the Lamesa Church of Christ, where Walter was an elder and Rubye taught Sunday School for many years.
    They moved to Lubbock in 2010, and Walter preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Shadrach Meshach Mitchell and Jessie Carmen Mitchell, and two brothers, Robert Mitchell, and Sewell Mitchell.
    She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Ott and Valeria Harmon, both of Montgomery; her daughter, Barbara Buckel, of Lubbock; son, Bob Buckel and daughter-in-law Krisan, of Azle; grandchildren Kara Rodriguez and husband Bryan, of Keller, Katie Buckel of Fort Worth, Alex Buckel of Abilene, Moses Lukeri of Edmond, OK, Kexsy Villeda Guerra of Fort Worth; and great-grandsons Ben and Luca Rodriguez and Jeremy Villeda
    Due to the current quarantine, a private graveside service will be held Thursday at Dawson County Cemetery, with Mark Hackett of the Lamesa Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Dawson County Cemetery under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
