Lanny Joe 'L.J.' Brewer

    Lanny Joe “L.J.” Brewer, 79, of O’Donnell passed away Thursday, May 14, 2020. 
    L.J. was born September 21, 1940, to Betty Beatrice (Beckham) Brewer in Lamesa, Texas. 
    In his childhood years he constructed and raced soap box derby cars. During high school, L.J. was very active in the FFA and athletics. After he completed high school, he attended Texas Tech University and received a degree in Animal Husbandry. He was a member of the Junior Livestock Judging Team and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Texas Tech. L.J. also attended North Texas State and earned a degree in finance.
    L.J. enjoyed his granddaughters and sharing their love of horses in their junior competitive rodeos. In fact, he was instrumental in locating and purchasing their horses. He found true joy in being involved by watching videos of them riding and offering advice where he could. He loved stock shows and raising club lambs. 
    L.J. loved to play dominoes with his friends at the gin. He won the Lubbock Ginners’ Association Domino Tournament. L.J. served on the O’Donnell Livestock Association Board as president. He was also a member of Young Farmers and served as the Scout Master in O’Donnell in the early ‘70s. L.J. owned the Brewer 10 Farm and he considered farming not a job, but a way of life.
    L.J. is survived by his son, Scott Brewer; daughters, Casondra Smith (Brian), and Jill Augustine (Darin); granddaughters, Brooke Audrey Smith and Chloe Elizabeth Augustine.
    Visitation will be held Thursday, May 21, 2020, from 10:00 a.m – 4:00 p.m. at Combest Family Funeral Homes in O’Donnell with family receiving friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
    A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at the O’Donnell Cemetery.
    Memorials can be made in his name to the Methodist Church of O’Donnell, Methodist Children’s Home, Lubbock Children’s Home, Boy Scouts, O’Donnell Cemetery, O’Donnell Stock Show, Make- A-Wish Foundation, or any veteran group.
