Kurt Pierce

Clifton “Kurt” Pierce was known as “Dad” to his kids, “Papa” to his grandkids, and “Coach Pierce” to the community of Lamesa.
Kurt was born on March 7th, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas (allegedly in the Alamo). He passed quickly on April 20th, 2023, at 66, in his home in Lamesa, Texas, after a heart attack. The love of his life, Kristy Pierce, wife of 43 years, was with him.
Kurt moved quite a bit in his early years, living all over Texas, New York, California, and even Spain. He met Kristy while in college at Texas Tech, and they married June 20th, 1981. They found teaching jobs in the Lamesa school district and made their home there, serving LISD for 35 years.
Kurt was a middle school history teacher and coach, then took the role of middle school boys athletic director. He took a three-year break from coaching to serve as the middle school assistant principal and then the high school assistant principal, before returning to his post and true passion as the middle school AD. He cared about every single student he interacted with. He retired in 2016.
Kurt’s favorite things were playing with his grandchildren, traveling with his wife, working in his yard, and of course cheering on the Dallas Cowboys during winning seasons, and yelling at them during losing seasons.
Kurt is survived by his wife Kristy, his kids Kyle and Jade Pierce, and Katy and Dusty Miller, and his 8 grandkids, Gemma Pierce, River Pierce, Jed Miller, Wilder Pierce, Mercer Miller, Baker Miller, Sunshine Pierce, and Maevyn Miller; his sister Kay Edgerly and husband, David; and  brother, Roy Pierce and wife, Chloe.
Kurt was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Pierce and Jimma Tongate Pierce; and brothers, Roland Pierce and Kent Pierce.
Memorial service will be held Monday, April 24th, 2023 at 4:00 p.m., at the new Lamesa High School Basketball Gym. We invite everyone to wear their Dallas Cowboys colors.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lamesa Independent School District Athletic Department. Information can be found by contacting Central Office and will be shared on social media.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Branon Funeral Home. To send condolences online, please visit www.branonfuneralhome.com.
