JoAnn McCarty
Martha JoAnn Moss McCarty, 87, died June 22, 2020 in her home in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
She was born September 10, 1932 in Stanton, Texas and resided in Horseshoe Bay since 2010.
JoAnn spent her childhood years on her family’s farm in the Key Community of Dawson County, Texas and later in Lamesa, where she attended high school. It was there she met William C. “Dub” McCarty, and they married in 1950 in Roswell, NM. They had two daughters, Cynthia (Cinde) and Mary Lou, and remained in Lamesa until 1964. In Lamesa, they owned Mac’s Mens Wear, a men’s clothing store on the Square. After closing the store, Dub began an insurance career with the Henry Norris Agency.
JoAnn and Dub were strong partners throughout their nearly 60 years of marriage, moving numerous times as his insurance career progressed. They lived in Arlington, Lubbock, Lewisville, Tool (on Cedar Creek Lake) and Athens prior to Dub’s passing in 2009. JoAnn moved to Horseshoe Bay in 2010 to be closer to her daughters.
Throughout their married lives, JoAnn and Dub made community service an essential focus in their lives. Together, they were very involved in the Republican Party, Kiwanis, local libraries, an arboretum and other community organizations. They were definitely a team as they either helped or managed fundraisers for numerous organizations – flipping pancakes, stirring chili, baking cakes and selling tickets and program ads.
They helped others and supported one another.
JoAnn served as President of the Athens Republican Women’s Club and the Athens Republican Couples Club. She was elected to serve on the Senate Republican Executive Council of Texas and was honored by the Texas Federation of Republican Women for her community service and leadership. She continued to be active in TFRW as a member and patron of Star Republican Women serving Horseshoe Bay and the surrounding area.
She served two terms on the Tool City Council and one term as Mayor Pro-Tem. She also served as an election worker for more than 15 years in Tool and Athens.
JoAnn was a president of the Kiwanis Club of Athens and was elected as the Kiwanis District 3 Lt. Governor for two terms. She continued her support of Kiwanis as a member of the Marble Falls chapter, attending meetings when she was able and providing financial support for numerous Kiwanis fundraising events to help local charities.
JoAnn was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1950 and in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was predeceased by her parents, Annie Mary and Arthur Moss, and her husband.
She is survived by her daughter Cinde Weatherby of Austin and grandson Cole Weatherby and his wife Kim of Austin; her daughter Mary Lou Kromer and her husband Preston L. “Lanny” Kromer of Horseshoe Bay and step-grandchildren Kyle Kromer and his wife Kristen, and Michelle Cummings and her husband Mike; and step-great-grandchildren Kirin Kromer McDaniels and her husband Kyle, Preston Kromer and Daniel Cummings.
JoAnn also leaves behind her beloved companion Katie, a beautiful Papillon, who for 7 years was always by her side.
The family thanks caregivers Debbie and Rachel for all the love and special care they provided to JoAnn in her last year.
