Emma Massey

    Graveside service for Emma Ruth (Dugger) Lewis Massey of Plains, Texas will be held at Dawson County Cemetery Friday, December 9, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Jim Medley officiating. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at First Baptist Church, Lamesa, Texas. 
    Arrangements are under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
    Emma Left us Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 8:25 a.m. from Shinnery Oaks Community Retirement Home in Denver City, Texas.
    She was born September 12, 1931, in Vernon, Texas. Emma was the youngest child of Percetha Alexander Dugger and Amantha Isabell McDonald Dugger. Emma was 91 years young.
    Emma graduated from Lamesa High School at the age of 15. At 16 she started school at Texas Tech University. She graduated by the age of 20 and obtained a Master’s degree in elementary education. She was a teacher in Plains, Texas for many years. 
    On December 28, 1949, she married Oscar Leon Lewis. They had 4 children, Percetha Clyde Lewis, Clarence Leon Lewis, William Deverelle Lewis and Amantha Lea Lewis. In November 2004, she married Clois Massey of Plains, Texas.
    Emma was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Plains, Texas. Her Bible could always be found on the side table by her chair, or the nightstand by her bed. Emma had many talents, but first and foremost was her love of gardening. She meticulously kept a manicured lawn with flower beds filled with beautiful flowers. She was active in the Garden Club in Plains for many years. Perhaps that is why she loved the color of green, Kelly green in particular, that and the fact that is was always an eye-catching color when combined with her gorgeous red hair. She was a practiced seamstress. That included anything from dresses to swimsuits. She also developed a love for oil painting and created beautiful artwork. Above all, she just loved people. She was always the first in the family to come when someone needed help.
    Emma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clois Massey; her children, William Deverelle Lewis on May 23, 1965, Clarence Leon Lewis on June 1, 1965, and Percetha Clyde Lewis on June 19, 2022; grandson, Clarence W. Cox in 2016; brother, P.A. Dugger in 1966; sister, Nellie Eloise Mashburn in 1977; brother, William Donald Dugger in 2000; and sister, Tharon Todd in 2005.
    She is survived by her daughter, Amantha Strawn, and her children, Stephen Cox, Elizabeth Cox, Aron Cox, and Darryl Cox; her daughter in law, Jerra Lewis and her son, Hayes Lewis; her daughter, Jessa Lewis; 6 great grandchildren; her care giver for the last 2 years, Herb Strawn; and her sister in love, Velora Copeland.
