Edythe Currey

    Graveside service for Edythe Lenora Currey, aged 91, of Lamesa will be held Friday, September 4, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Dawson County Cemetery with Robert Davis officiating.   Arrangements are under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. 
    Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home.
    Edythe passed away 5 days away from celebrating her 92nd birthday on Sunday, August 30, 2020 in Lamesa, Texas. 
    She was born September 4, 1928 to Reverend J.C. Atkins and Ella Butler Atkins in Desdemona, Texas. She was 1 of 7 siblings whose names all started with the letter E. Edythe married John Coke Currey June 3, 1947 in Lamesa. Edythe and John worked on the ranches together, John being a true-to-life working cowboy and Edythe doing the cooking for the cowboys of the ranches that they worked for in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. The last ranch they had the pleasure of working on was the Lazy S ranch for Frank Jones.
    They had a loving marriage that ended in 12 short years with the passing of John on November 17, 1959. Edythe then moved to Lamesa with her 3 children at the end of 1959. 
    She was a member of Second Baptist Church. Edythe loved music. She enjoyed playing the piano, she could also play any string instrument and could learn any song by ear. She loved canning vegetables and sewing. She was a member of Young at Heart and Home Extension. She loved playing Jokers, card games and dominos with her family and friends. Edythe was one of the longest attending members of the Dawson Co Senior Citizen Center with over 40 years of attendance.
    She loved joking and fussing with her grandson Colten over silly things such as burnt muffins and cheating at card games. Edythe loved to socialize, visit with family and friends and always enjoyed a good conversation . Edythe never met a stranger and will truly be missed by all that knew her.
    Edythe is survived by her two daughters, Shirley Garrett and husband, Jimmy and Sherry Terry Barrett and husband, Neal, all of Borden County; grandsons, Monty Garrett and wife, Charlotte and Levi Garrett, all of Borden County, Benjamin Terry and wife, Amy of Lamesa, Waylon Terry and wife, Amber of Malvern, Ohio; step grandchildren, Jana Gardner and husband, Terry of Lubbock and Kelly Garrett and wife, Becky of Wolforth; numerous great grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Atkins and wife, Ruth of Fort Worth; and two sisters, Eloyce Davis and Evelyn Wiggins and husband, Leon of Granbury; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 
    She is preceded in death by her parents; Reverend J.C Atkins and wife Ella; a son, Johnney Cal Currey; grandson Mathew Terry; step great grandson, Landin Robinson; brother, James Earnest Atkins; and sisters, Estelle Jordan and Eunice Bass. 
    In lieu of flowers family suggests memorials to Dawson County Senior Citizens at 609 N. Austin, Ave. Lamesa, Texas.
