FIRE AND SMOKE

A fire reported about 10 p.m. Thursday in a large pile of dead trees and limbs near South 2nd Street and Avenue R lit up the night sky in Lamesa and sent a cloud of smoke drifting over a big part of the city. Firefighters moved quickly to keep the blaze from spreading through nearby dead grass and brush, then spent about three hours at the scene dousing the blaze with about 16,000 gallons of water. With the tree still burning as he worked, firefighter Dalton Burdett (left) used a chain saw to cut away some of the limbs of a dead tree along the edge of Avenue R to keep it from falling across the road.
