A fire reported about 10 p.m. Thursday in a large pile of dead trees and limbs near South 2nd Street and Avenue R lit up the night sky in Lamesa and sent a cloud of smoke drifting over a big part of the city. Firefighters moved quickly to keep the blaze from spreading through nearby dead grass and brush, then spent about three hours at the scene dousing the blaze with about 16,000 gallons of water. Two new directors of the Dawson County Water Conservation District were appointed Wednesday to fill vacancies created by the departure of two longtime board members.
Last year’s weather situation in Dawson County was one of contrasts, with flooding in late June and early July followed by an almost complete lack of rain the last three and a half months of the year.
