USDA’s March Prospective Plantings Report indicates U.S. producers intend to plant 13.8 million acres of cotton in 2019-2020, 2.3 percent less from the previous year. Upland area is projected to be 13.5 million acres, 2.3 percent less than 2018-2019 while extra-long staple (ELS) area is projected at 255,000 acres, a 2.4 percent increase. The National Cotton Council’s planting intentions survey, released in early February, indicated U.S. farmers intend to plant 14.2 million acres of upland cotton and 264,000 acres of ELS cotton.
