Lamesa firefighters had to block off the area and wait before extinguishing a fire that erupted on Thursday afternoon when one of two utility poles that toppled came crashing down atop a gas meter. The incident happened about 4:45 p.m. just south of the intersection of North 14th Street and Elgin Avenue.
