David Livingstone came to Africa in the 1840s and returned multiple times until his death in 1873. He was at first a worker in a cotton mill in Scotland, then trained as a doctor, joined a missionary society hoping to go to China but went to Africa instead. While in Africa he made it a point of trying to end the Arab slave trade. He kept pushing north from South Africa in the attempts to reach these unmet peoples.
