Over 300 teams participate in Fourth of July RopingFront Page - Published on: July 07, 2012
Organizers of the annual Fourth of July Roping, which was held Wednesday at the Lamesa Rodeo Arena, were very pleased with this year’s participation in the event.
“It was fantastic ... probably one of the best we’ve ever had,” said Richard Garcia, local coordinator of the team roping event and chief of police for the City of Lamesa.
Garcia was one of the original event organizers when the annual roping first was held back in 1996.
That event originally was called “Pick and Draw Roping,” but the name later was changed when the event became part of the local Independence Day Celebration.
Garcia said this year’s roping had a total of over 300 teams participating. He added that the event went off smoothly and there were no problems.
In addition to a good turnout of local and area team ropers, Garcia said, participants also attended from Lubbock, Andrews, Crane, Kermit and Spur – to name some of the places represented.
