Cal Ripken baseball tournaments returning to Lamesa

Lamesa 10-year-old all-stars prepare for battle in Andrews

Sports - Published on: June 20, 2012

After once playing centerfield on one of the better high school baseball teams to ever grace a Lamesa High School uniform,  Jimmy Rodriguez now is trying his hand at coaching some 20 years later.

After once patrolling the centerfield in the Golden Tors’ outfield back on their 1992 Class 4A regional runners-up team, Rodriguez will be leading Lamesa’s 10-year-old Cal Ripken baseball all-stars into battle in their district tournament that starts Thursday evening at Andrews.

“I’m loving it,” Rodriguez said. “I love the excitement as much as the competitiveness.

“We’re probably just as excited about all this as the kids are and we’re probably even more nervous.”

Lamesa’s 10-year-old Cal Ripken baseball all-stars open up play in that district tournament by taking on Andrews at 8 p.m. Thursday at  Andrews.

“We’ve got the home team that first game over there,” Rodriguez said. “From what we’ve been hearing they had a pretty good team last year, so we’re expecting a good game out of these guys.”
