Jul 28, 2010 The Dawson County Soil and Water Conservation District will observe the 65th anniversary of its official formation this Saturday.
The district was organized to promote and educate local farmers about the value of conservation farming.
“Our farmers are interested in conserving their soil,” are some of the comments contained in a historical document of the SWCD. “The Board is of the opinion that, as conservation measures prove their value, the attitude and interest of local farmers will increase greatly.
“When tractors first came out, farmers said they would not do. Any new undertaking is always subject to criticism until it proves its value. Soil Conservation practices will prove their value and become as common as tractors in this District."
First directors for the Dawson County SWCD were: Ben Dopson, chairman; W.T. Snellgrove, vice-chairman; Cartis White, secretary; Jack Broyles, member; and Carson Echols, member.
Directors currently serving on the board are: E.L. Hendon, chairman; Terry Adcock, vice-chairman; Jerry Vogler, secretary; and members Kenneth Pearson and Nicky Goode.
