Outdated, no longer sought out materials pulled at library

Published on: Mar 10, 2010

Over 2,500 library materials, including books, magazines, audio cassettes and VHS movies, have been pulled from the shelves of the Dawson County Public Library because they are old, outdated or just not sought out by library patrons.

The Dawson County Commissioners Court gave Library Director Debbie Garza permission on Tuesday afternoon to declare those materials as surplus and to donate them to Friends of the Library – a non-profit organization – for sale to the public.

The book sale sponsored by Friends of the Library is held every few years, Garza said, as items are removed from the library’s inventory.

“We are hitting it pretty hard this year and trying to streamline our inventory,” Garza told commissioners. She added, “There usually are not this many titles removed in any one year; usually there are only about half this many.

“We went through the entire library this year, while we usually only do one section of the library every other year.”

Garza told commissioners that 2,586 library materials actually have been withdrawn from the library system and stored in anticipation of the book sale, which probably will be held around the end of this month.
