No one contests local races for city, school, hospital, water board

Published on: Mar 10, 2010

No new candidates filed here by Monday’s deadline for elections scheduled this year by the City of Lamesa, school board, hospital district or water district.

As a result, there will be no contested races in any of those local elections this May.

In some cases, state law allows local entities to declare any unopposed candidates as elected and to cancel their elections. There are some exceptions, so the local entities all will have to check and see whether or not they can cancel their elections.

Mayor Kelvin Barkowsky is the only candidate in the city election. The position of mayor is the only place up for election this year and it is a three-year term that will expire in 2013.

Barkowsky currently is completing his first term in office, having been elected as mayor in May of 2007.

Chad Raines and Tracy Harris both are seeking re-election to their respective places on the Lamesa Independent School District board of education. Raines is the District 4 representative, while Harris represents District 5.
